About the Children of Nicaragua
Nicaragua
is a small country in Central America. It has four million people
and two million of these are children less than 15 years old. This
country has a variety of social problems caused by civil war, natural disasters, and slow
economic development. These things have directly affected many Nicaraguan
families who now live in severe poverty without access to clean water,
electricity, education, medical care, social security, etc. A lack
of jobs has resulted in a large amount of children trying to find other
ways to survive. They roam the streets,
where they can easily become victims of all kinds of abuse, violence, and
often become involved in delinquency, prostitution, drug abuse, gang
activity, and more.
There are approximately 700,000 children that live in these types of
situations, and from those, 300,000 work in the streets. Many are
orphaned by the war and many are handicapped. These children are the
future of Nicaragua and they need the support of people like you.
